(Love the lyrics and the intro is insane. When I listen to this I think that the “Shepherd of fire” is in fact Satan. Matt also sings “I´ve got a storybook of my own.” A real slap in the face for many hardcore christians, love it! :P)
Hail to the King – 8/10
(I´ve played this track thousands of times and it´s still amazing, not many tracks can pull that of for me, I keep coming back for more)
Doing Time – 8.5/10
(It´s a casual but upfront powersong and I love the low vocals which Matt pulls of very well, the solo is amazing as well, nicely done by Gates)
This Means War – 7.5/10
(I´ve not really given this track a fair chance yet, but as I feel now I can only give it 7.5 as a score, which is damn low for this album since it´s probably the best album I´ve heard in a long while)
Requiem – 7.5/10
(Just as with This Means War, I´ve been so busy with listening to the other tracks which are a tiny bit more amusing to my ears, however, the intro, verse and stick are top notch)
Crimson Day – 9/10
(I love Avenged Sevenfold´s slower balladlike songs, the melodies and vocals are always a pleasure to listen to, the lyrics in this song seriously touches my heart, very well done)
Heretic – 7/10
(Judging by you other guys here I might be the weird one when it comes to Requiem, This Means War and Heretic. Misunderstand me right… Heretic is an amazing track that I (as a songwriter) can´t pull off just yet but it is, for me, the weakest track on the record)
Coming Home 9.5/10
![]()
(The strongest chorus on the record for sure, the lyrics give me a feeling of hope and “trust”. The outro gives me the chills every time I listen to this song)
Planets – 9/10
(Matt really release his powers in this chorus, PLAAANEETS COOOOLIIIIIIDE! It gives me shivers and the orchestra really isn´t a bad move for this song, I love it when classical instruments meet with metal. F*cking genious)
Acid Rain – 10/10
(This is probably the best Matt has ever been when it comes to lyrics, this song is truly a masterpiece. In my top 5 songs of all time for sure. When I listen to this song I tend to close my eyes and just enjoy the crap out of every second of Hail to the Kings last song. The ending so beautifully matches with the intro of Shepherd of Fire. When you loop the album listen to the rain in Acid Rain´s ending and then the crackling fire in Shepherd of Fire´s intro. Amazing)

Following the release of 'Carry On' for the Call of Duty Arms: Black Ops II video game, Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio with new drummer, Arin Ilejay of Confide, to record 2013's Hail to the King. In a press announcement, vocalist M. Shadows announced they would be attempting to go back to their Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin roots, and at the surface, the idea of dumbing down their music to sturdy classic rock grooves made a lot of sense, since many of the compositions on their last two albums had become overwrought with studio overdubbing. Unfortunately, once they tried to take inspiration from other bands, they mimicked them so well that they lost their sense of identity in the process. 'Doing Time' came straight out of the Guns N' Roses songbook, 'This Means War' is a direct rip of Metallica's 'Sad But True,' and 'Crimson Day' could be any number of '80s hair metal power ballads. By the album's second half, Avenged Sevenfold can't help but let loose their guitar shredding theatrics a bit, and their personality starts to shine through as the tempo quickens and tracks take flight to unabashed heights. 'Heretic' and 'Coming Home' are still firmly indebted to their roots (specifically, Megadeth and Iron Maiden) but they are exciting metal numbers, and they set the stage for the colossal 'Planets,', which incorporates motifs from 'The Planets' suite by 20th century composer Gustav Holst and includes all the arpeggiated soloing and operatic yowling you could ever want. If this sounds ridiculous, that's because it is, but it's undeniably more fun to hear the members pushing themselves and showboating than doing mock covers. ~ Jason Lymangrover
